The research patrols
Description: Conducting the research patrols for shrimp stock assessment in order to manage fishery in the Hormozgan Province
Text:

The research patrols have been launched since December of the last year with a captain and skilled personnel of a floating vessel with a time schedule of 4 days sampling per month using the trawling method in the areas of Sirik to Dargahan in the north of Qeshm Island in order to manage the beginning of shrimp fishery in 2018-2019. In this survey, the depths between 3 and 35 meters were studied. The spawning condition, arrival of the new generation of shrimp in the main habitat and the growth of young shrimp were studied in this investigation. As the shrimp harvest season approached, the most important research patrol for shrimp stock assessment began on 13 September this year with the establishment of the research team of the institute on 5 floating vessels for 5 days. In addition to the above mentioned objectives, the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) and the right time to start shrimp fishery season are calculated in these research patrols. In order to investigate the effects of environmental factors, sampling of water and sediment of shrimp fishery areas in the Hormozgan province is also carried out. The results of the preliminary studies indicated that the average size of shrimp is slightly smaller than expected. This may cause a little delay in catching time. Moreover, the amount of total allowable catch can be calculated with a higher error rate due to the incomplete entry of shrimp to fishery areas. Therefore, in order to minimize the effect of this inappropriate situation, it is necessary to monitor the shrimp fishery areas and to accurately collect the fisheries statistics at the time of shrimp harvest on a daily basis to create an effective backup storage for shrimp fishery management by using analytic models. Recent studies have shown that shrimp reserves have only one age group in each year and on the other hand, shrimp spawning season is after the shrimp fishery season. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain a percentage of the shrimp stock after the shrimp fishery season to spawn and produce a new generation in order to preserve the shrimp stocks for the next year. In this regard, the control of the number of active floating vessels, number of fishing days in the fishery season and the start and the end time of the shrimp fishery season are important in the management of shrimp fishery and the lack of attention to them may lead to a gradual decrease in reserves.
