Shrimp Research Center

Iranian Fisheries Research Organization

Iran Shrimp Research Institute

Vision

To research on sustainable exploitation of marine shrimp resources, improving the cultured shrimp production and reducing of the investment risk in aquaculture towards improving food security.

History

The Iran Shrimp Research Institutewas established in 1978. The Institute is one of the oldest premier research institutions in the field of fisheries research in the south of Iran, located in Bushehr province. The activities of Institute, initially called “Persian Gulf Fisheries Research and Development Centre”, started with a study on “Assessment of benthic fishes of the Persian Gulf” by collaboration of the FAO and surrounding Persian Gulf countries. Since 1989, the institute renamed as Persian Gulf Fisheries Research Canter (PGFRC) and the researches focused on the economical aquatics, especially on shrimp. Through findings of these researches, scientific management of the aquatic stocks in Iranian waters of the Persian Gulf was implemented. For the first time in the region, in 1984,Peneaeus semisulcatus shrimp (green tiger prawn), was successfully reared in laboratory scale in Bandargah Broodstocking Research Station. To date, a wide range of biological, ecological, shrimp aquaculture and pollutions researches have been carried out on stock assessment. Inline with development of the shrimp aquaculture industry, PGFRC had focused its activities on shrimp and was renamed to Iran Shrimp Research Institute (ISRI) since 1999.
